Mayflies live the most thrilling life in the animal kingdom because they literally have only 1 day to live. A Mayfly’s day starts with males hovering above the water where the females come flying to mate. The male grabs a passing female with its front legs and the pair mate in the air.
When they’re done, the male releases the female, and she slowly descends to the surface of the water. On the surface, she lies motionless, with her wings flat; this is when she lays her eggs (50 to 10,000). After laying eggs, the female mayfly may die or become food for fish underwater. The male Mayfly flies away to a nearby land where he also dies in a few hours after mating. The eggs she laid fall to the bottom of the water where they stick to the plants and stones.
