James Allen (28 November 1864 – 24 January 1912) was a British philosophical writer known for his inspirational books and poetry. He is considered a pioneer of the self-help movement. His best-known work, “As a Man Thinketh”, has been widely read and mass-produced since its publication in 19021. The book has served as a source of inspiration for many motivational and self-help authors.
In addition to his literary contributions, James Allen and his family lived a simple life of contemplation in a small cottage in Ilfracombe, Devon, England. During this time, he wrote for nine years, producing a total of 19 works. He also edited and published a magazine called “The Light of Reason”2.
