Eric Butterworth was a prominent figure in the Unity movement and a leading voice in modern practical mysticism. He was born on September 12, 1916, in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, and was raised in Southern California by his mother, who was a Unity minister1. Butterworth was known for his ability to simplify complex metaphysical teachings into easily understandable concepts, earning him a reputation as the “twentieth century Emerson.”
He authored sixteen best-selling books on metaphysical spirituality and was a gifted theologian, philosopher, and lecturer. For over fifty years, he taught “practical Christianity,” helping thousands of people to lead more abundant lives through the study and application of Truth2. His teachings emphasized the divinity within every individual and the importance of positive thinking and universal law to manifest prosperity and good things in life1.
One of his most influential works, “Discover the Power Within You,” had a significant impact on Oprah Winfrey, who said that the book changed her perspective on life and religion2. Butterworth’s message was that God is not ‘up there’ but exists inside each one of us, and it’s up to us to seek the divine within2.
Eric Butterworth passed away on April 17, 2003, but his legacy continues through his teachings and the many lives he touched21.
