Joseph Denis Murphy (May 20, 1898 – December 16, 1981) was an Irish author and New Thought minister. He was ordained in Divine Science and Religious Science. Let me share some details about his life and career:
- Early Life: Joseph Denis Murphy was born in Ballydehob, County Cork, Ireland. His father was a private boys’ school headmaster, and he was raised in a Roman Catholic family. Initially, he joined the Jesuits and was enrolled in the National School. However, as he reached his late teens, he began to question Catholic orthodoxy and withdrew from the seminary. Seeking new experiences and ideas, he left Ireland for America in 1922.
- Career and Spiritual Exploration:
- In New York City, Murphy worked as a professional pharmacist after obtaining a degree in chemistry. He attended the Church of the Healing Christ, which was part of the Church of Divine Science, where he was influenced by minister Emmet Fox.
- Murphy traveled to India and spent time with Indian sages, learning Hindu philosophy. He later incorporated Hindu ideologies into a new church he formed in America.
- In the mid-1940s, he moved to Los Angeles, where he met Religious Science founder Ernest Holmes. Holmes ordained him into Religious Science in 1946. Murphy taught at various locations, including Rochester, New York, and the Institute of Religious Science in Los Angeles.
- A meeting with Divine Science Association president Erwin Gregg led to his re-ordination into Divine Science. He became the minister of the Los Angeles Divine Science Church, which he developed into one of the largest New Thought congregations in the country.
- During World War II, Murphy served in the Army as a pharmacist. After his discharge, he chose not to return to pharmacy and instead traveled extensively, studying at universities in the United States and abroad.
- Thomas Troward, a judge, philosopher, doctor, and professor, significantly influenced Murphy’s spiritual journey.
Joseph Murphy authored several books, including “The Power of Your Subconscious Mind”. His teachings emphasized the power of the mind, positive thinking, and the role of the subconscious in shaping our lives
