The God In Yourself – Prentice Mulford
Prentice Mulford (April 5, 1834 – c. May 30, 1891) was an American literary humorist and author who played a significant role in the development of the New Thought movement. Some of his notable works include “Thoughts are Things” and “Your Forces and How to Use Them,” which laid out many principles of the movement, including the Law of Attraction. Mulford’s writings are considered foundational in the New Thought philosophy and continue to influence readers today1.
He was born in Sag Harbor, New York, and in 1856, he sailed to California where he spent 16 years, during which he tried his luck in mining and even ran for a position in the California State Assembly. Although he did not win the election, he became a prominent figure in San Francisco’s literary scene as a writer and editor for various papers. Mulford was known for his humorous writing style and vivid descriptions of mining life and life at sea1.
After returning to New York City in 1872, he became a comic lecturer, poet, essayist, and a columnist for The New York Daily Graphic. His body was found in a boat in Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn, in 1891, and he was later buried in Oakland Cemetery in Sag Harbor1. Mulford’s legacy continues through his contributions to literature and philosophy.
