Eric Butterworth (1916-2003) was a leading spokesperson in modern times on “practical mysticism” and a spiritual icon in the Unity movement¹. Born in Winnipeg, Canada, in 1916, he attended Fresno State University and Capital University in Ohio, where he studied music. During World War II, he trained for the ministry at Unity Village in Missouri and later served as a lieutenant in the Medical Corps, training medical personnel and providing chaplaincy services. After the war, he returned to his ministerial studies and graduated from Unity Ministerial School, becoming ordained in 1948.

Butterworth authored sixteen best-selling books on metaphysical spirituality, making complex teachings accessible through simple sound bites of awareness. His unique ability to convey profound ideas in concise “essaysettes” earned him the nickname “The twentieth-century Emerson.” His teachings emphasized practical Christianity, helping thousands of people discover their own power and purpose by studying and applying Truth.

He established three powerful Unity ministries: first in Pittsburgh, then Detroit (where he authored his first book, “Unity: A Quest for Truth”), and finally in New York City. In New York, he lectured at venues like Carnegie Hall and Avery Fisher Hall, drawing thousands of attendees each week. Oprah Winfrey, who credited Butterworth’s book “Discover the Power Within You” with changing her perspective on life and religion, described his teaching: “God isn’t ‘up there.’ He exists inside each one of us, and it’s up to us to seek the divine within” ¹.
